Description
The Director of Individual Giving and Donor Relations (DIG) is a member of the Music Academy of the West’s Institutional Advancement Department. Primary responsibilities include building relationships and soliciting gifts from individuals at the major gift level ($2,500+), managing the Academy’s direct mail and online appeals at all levels of giving, overseeing the creation and implementation of all donor giving benefits, and overseeing year-round strategies for donor stewardship.

The Music Academy’s Advancement team is responsible for raising $4+ million to support the annual fund and select special projects. Individual contributions comprise 65% of all giving at the Music Academy with additional funding coming from foundation grants, corporate giving, and two annual fundraising benefits. Contributions to the annual fund have increased by 26% over the past three years. The Academy completed a $17.5 million capital campaign in April 2016.

Direct Responsibilities
• Develops, implements, and oversees a comprehensive individual giving plan to meet established financial targets.
• Supervises the identification and qualification of new individual donor prospects.
• Personally solicits individual gifts through in-person visits, via phone, and through written correspondence that provide revenue to support the annual fund and other special projects.
• Collaborates with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) to manage cultivation strategies, solicitation schedules, and recognition benefits for all current individual major gift donors.
• Oversees a robust and engaged volunteer Advancement Committee that meets five times annually.
• Works closely with board and Advancement Committee volunteers to develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new major gift donors.
• Collaborates with the VPIA and the Associate Director of Development (ADD) on strategies to evaluate donor giving statistics with the objective to increase donor giving, re-engage lapsed donors, acquire new donors, and maximize donor retention.
• Collaborates with the Advancement team on gift solicitation strategies to support the Academy’s two annual fundraising benefits.
• Develops and manages specific areas of the Advancement Department revenue and expense budgets.
• Works with the Database Manager to continually evaluate best practices for donor data entry, retrieval, and management.

Reporting Structure
The DIG reports to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate has 5+ years’ experience working as a fundraising professional and has extensive experience identifying, soliciting, and developing relationships, with a proven track record of meeting their goals. S/he will be a person of high energy, integrity, and ethical standards. Experience with in-person solicitations, developing and managing budgets, and working with volunteers is essential.
